Chaff Versus Wheat
This post is not intended to be disparaging of those who investigate paranormal locations using their own funds, energy and enthusiasm geared to their curiosity. Rather, it is a litmus test I have arranged as a means to evaluate the evaluation of such phenomenon. As a retired process engineer, one of the first things I learned was that the first criteria is to be self skeptical and to measure three times and cut once. Even then, you are simply playing with probability. Ask someone what a critical path is and the the critical dependencies between the activities that lead toward a result.
As any regular readers know, I suspect that ghost phenomenon are memory phenomenon that are energetic, self organized in relation to their non sentient attachment to their own objectification, lacking a sense of self context. Ghost phenomenon brings to mind, of course, Arthur Koestler who observed the paranormal with this pithy comment on the hidden linkages within the anomalous;
The moment of truth, the sudden emergence of a new insight, is an act of intuition. Such intuitions give the appearance of miraculous flushes, or short-circuits of reasoning. In fact they may be likened to an immersed chain, of which only the beginning and the end are visible above the surface of consciousness. The diver vanishes at one end of the chain and comes up at the other end, guided by invisible links.
One of the most pathetic examples of measuring this phenomenon of hidden linkages was found in a popular show that encompassed the use of a Tri-field meter during a violent electrical storm. The same lack of appreciation for context is noted during most investigations which are not investigations as they really pretend to be experiments which they are not. The issue with the popularity of these shows is their misleading context of performing experiments wherein the vast majority are so contaminated before they begin that the results have no meaning other than to raise the addictive biochemistry of the viewers. If an enthusiast of crime detection took the place of a seasoned homicide detective, how well would that endeavor go toward solving an actual crime? Most popular television shows are simply bumbling around in the dark. Here is why I think this.
The house chosen must have consistently provocative examples of being haunted for over several decades. A team of a anthropologist, a physicist, an electrical engineer and a psychologist should review each candidate and determine by consensus, which location should be studied. A field survey of several weeks duration should measure the geology, the background radiation, potential sources of interferences, local residents, and so forth before any further work is commenced. The power to such a location must be severed at the line and not simply keep the local feeder line energized to the locations main distribution panel. All measuring equipment as much as possible should be shielded for leakage and surveillance should be remotely conducted outside of the location at a distance to preclude interference. Magnetometers, and photon detection equipment as well as IR cameras and recording devices should be powered down and up to measure field ratios before beginning. The site should be physically secured and monitored to ensure only preselected individuals and test subjects are to enter the area. All outside sources of light should be eliminated physically. Once this is completed the criteria for test subjects to be placed within the location should be determined by psychological screening and testing. Perhaps agnostics would be preferable or several experiments with varying types should be individually tested after screening occurs.Several test subjects should then be placed within the location comfortably for 48 hours and the situation monitored, while measurements are recorded and evaluated in real time, not simply after wards, as a post script, again by qualified science and technology professionals.
All of this costs money. To venture into this assuming that well meaning psychics and random subjects do not contaminate an experiment is simply ignorance at it's best and more entertaining than enlightening. The investigators themselves need to be evaluated as they are the context for the experiments they preform. Simply pulling a rabbit out of hat does nothing to expand knowledge beyond the acknowledgment that often the experimenters unknowingly are in over their heads and know no more when they leave as when they entered a location except that yes, things go bump. So, then what?
Otherwise, until the real experiments take place, all of this babbling jokester noise will continue to serve no real purpose other than to to have the blind leading the blind in a three ring circus wherein they unknowingly are a performer.
