The biggest shopping mall in the Middle East has been evacuated as workmen scramble to contain a leak in the massive shark-filled aquarium inside the centre. An official at Dubai's civil defence department said: There was a small problem, a simple crack, and the water leaked.
The vast tank features the world's largest viewing panel at 32.8 metres (107ft 7in) wide and 8.3 metres (27ft 2in) high. Witnesses say a large part of the area around the aquarium has been cordoned off.
Rescue crews are believed to be at the scene and three mall security employees were reportedly seen entering the area wearing orange life vests. A witness working in one of the mall's jewellery stores said shopkeepers were told to close their shops amid concerns water could flood the mall's marble floors.
Other shopkeepers were seen being escorted out of the area by mall security. The Dubai Mall and its signature aquarium opened in November 2008.
