

The time it took reptiles to learn to walk upright - a development which led to the evolution of mammals - happened more quickly than originally thought, according to new research. This development was previously believed to be a slow process taking between 20 million to 30 million years.But a Bristol University study of 460 fossil tracks left by reptiles millions of years ago revealed this may have occurred in a shorter period of time. Academics Tai Kubo and Professor Mike Benton believe their research suggests reptiles started to walk with their legs tucked underneath their bodies like modern mammals shortly after a mass extinction, which occurred 250 million years ago.
