We've all heard of Travis Walton's harrowing alien encounter as both he wrote it and through its depiction in the film, "Fire in the Sky." But the year before Walton's disappearance, another man in Medicine Bow National Forest suddenly found himself face to face with a peculiar alien creature that pointed a spiked appendage at him and asked the question, "Would you like to come with me?" The creature, which would later make local headlines was very odd even to UFO enthusiasts who would hear Higdon's story later, but it seemed to suggest something not only strange but possibly devious going on as the creature explained why it was on Earth.
Higdon had been hunting and looking for Elk that October afternoon when he spotted a particularly tempting specimen and raised his rifle to take the shot. But when he pulled the trigger, suddenly everything around him went deathly silent. He didn't hear the report of his rifle, and suddenly the sounds of insects around him went silent as well. The bullet traveled far slower than it should have, and yet still somehow maintained its ability to stay aloft in the air. It was as if the shot were taking place in an alternate reality working outside of time and space. But while that was strange, what happened next was even stranger. Soon Higdon found himself lowering his rifle and staring straight at a very thin creature approximately six feet tall with an almost human appearance.
Almost human because it had no jaw, had straight hair standing on end on its head with two appendages growing out from the middle of its scalp, and instead of a hand it had what appeared to be a sort of coned spike in its stump. The other hand was normal. It stood there looking at him, and the two regarded one another for a moment scrutinizing him with its strange otherworldly eyes. After a moment, it approached and asked Higdon if Higdon would like to come with it. More than a little confused, Higdon said yes. Soon he found himself suddenly encased in a cubicle where he learned that the being was visiting the planet as an explorer and possibly looking to find what local animals tasted like. Perhaps relieved, Higdon learned that the human race was not on the menu for the aliens whose technology was clearly far more advanced than our own.
When he was found later, Higdon was extremely disoriented and had to be taken to a hospital where he would later recount his experience. After he regained his appetite, he finally was able to relate the strange story to a hypnotist who was able to extract more information through the use of hypnotherapy. It turns out he and the strange creature had used the cubicle as a device to travel to another distant world. Once there, Higdon had been shown a massive tower with a cone at the top of it raised over 100 feet in the air. The tower rotated and emitted a beam of light so brilliant, or perhaps so unusual that it hurt Higdon's eyes to look at. The two entered the tower and Higdon found himself in a room where the being and four others like it briefly talked with him. The creatures said Higdon would be returned to his home planet.
And the alien had offered Higdon its name, "Ausso." As he was preparing to leave the ship, the creature bade him farewell. But we can't help but wonder, assuming Higdon's story is accurate, if for a few moments humanity was being considered as a food source by some distant and extremely powerful race of creatures.
