This historic castle was owned by the Dunbars of Westfield from 1530 to 1800. The ruins now deserted, are said to be haunted by the ghost of Janet Dalrymple Dunbar.
In the mid 1600’s, Janet, the eldest daughter of Sir James Dalrymple was betrothed in an arranged marriage to David Dunbar, heir of Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon. Janet was very unhappy with the engagement, being in love with Archibald, third Lord Rutherford. The Rutherfords had fallen into poverty and Janet’s parents forbade the relationship, insisting that she marry David. Janet married David in the church of Old Luce, two miles from her home at Carsecleugh Castle. It was a hot summer day, but her brothers both recollect that Janet’s hands were “cold as ice,” as she walked down the aisle.
During the night of the wedding day, David Dunbar was stabbed in the bridal chamber.Beyond the fact that the groom was found near to death and the bride covered in blood, there is no clear evidence on what happened, there being no more witnesses to the events in the room. The two stories that are given are that the bride stabbed David in the bridal chamber and died insane. In the second, the disappointed Archibald concealed himself in the chamber, stabbed the bridegroom and escaped through the window.........
.....On several occasions, visitors have claimed they have seen the ghost of Janet Dalrymple Dunbar roaming the castle ruins, still wearing her blood-stained night clothes and with head hung low as if filled with deep regret.
