Christine Reber sat at the end of the hall, her back to the wall, just outside the children’s room in the Historic Museum in Palmyra.
It was dark and bitter cold outside and the heating kicking on raised loud clicks and bangs in the pipes. Camera fixed on her, Reber’s voice held gentle encouragement, urging the young children said to roam the halls of the old museum to come play with her, to push the ball down the hall.
Nothing happened, the dark held only silence.
Next door at the Phelps General Store, another team from Haunted ROC Paranormal Society moved from room to room, pausing long enough to ask questions of the night, hoping for answers, for proof of ghosts. Still nothing.
Chad Foster, Tom Jacobs, Dean Smith, Walter Bayley, Reber, Jason Helmer, Christine Bayley and Scott Foster had gathered at 8 p.m. that night to begin setting up equipment, four DVR cameras with sound in each museum. Each member equipped themselves with handheld audio recorders, digital cameras and a flashlight. The group of eight was split in two and one handheld camera went with each team. Reber had set up up toys in the children’s room upstairs.
Before set up was complete, the canopy on the lamp hanging in the Phelps General Store window had begun to spin for no apparent reason. The night looked promising.
