It was not long after 10pm in autumn 1988 and Russ Kellett was riding his 750cc chopper motorcycle towards his home in Bradford when he experienced a life-changing event.
He had stopped at a level crossing near Skipton when he was suddenly aware of a very bright light around him.
“It was that time of year – summer was just going and you could smell people burning leaves,” he said. “I’d gone to see someone about getting some work done on the bike but he wasn’t there. I was at a level crossing and that was the start of everything going wrong with my health.
“I got immersed in this bright light. I thought there was someone in a car behind me who was getting too close but then the light was that big I thought it was a wagon – but when I looked around there was nothing there.”
He remembered noticing the light reflected in the instruments of his motorcycle and realised it was coming from above. He added: “I had a feeling of floating, it was a very calm feeling, then the light went out. As soon as the light went out I was just sat there, the barriers were up and I was on the bike in the middle of the road.
“I felt the wind in my face as I headed for home. But at the side of me there was another light and it was keeping up with me. It was at the side of the road that was just fields, it wasn’t a car or a bike, it had travelled across the fields. I pulled over and parked up. I just watched this ball of light head towards Halifax. I was watching it for 10 minutes.”
