Private Alex Kennedy is one of the youngest soldiers to receive the Military Cross for "extraordinary" bravery in Afghanistan. The infantryman with 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment was just 18 when he crawled through a hail of bullets to save his platoon commander's life.
Their platoon was caught in a Taliban ambush in Helmand Province in June last year. Private Kennedy, from Bromsgrove, is extremely proud of being awarded the Military Cross and says his time in Afghanistan has made him a better person.
He said: "It's made me grow up, look at life a bit more, live it. But yeah, it's made me grow up, become a man. "I was a boy before, now I'm a man."
Platoon commander Captain Andy Bell was shot three times in the legs during the gun fight. He is thankful and proud Private Kennedy was part of his platoon.
