Look at these two pictures. Both are of the same sunny country scene, but the one at the top is how Danielle Burton sees it. The 19-year-old views the world as if looking through the lens of a kaleidoscope.
Only 20 other people are known to suffer permanently from the condition, which is called Persistent Migraine Aura. Miss Burton used to see perfectly, but a week after her 19th birthday all that changed and she lost her vision, with all the colours of the rainbow 'snowing' in front of her.
Some of the time she can make out shapes, although they are fuzzy and like 'television static' At her worst all she can see is blue and purple fluorescent clouds - making her totally blind.
She said: 'I went 19 years of my life being able to see everything and didn't even realise how precious sight is. I had no reason to think this might happen, my family are all very healthy.'
Miss Burton's case is understood to be among the worst because she has almost no break from the bright colours in her vision. Even when she closes her eyes they remain there.
The condition came on last October. The call-centre worker, from Portsmouth, said: 'I had been having bad migraines, and thought I was just getting another one. 'Then I suddenly lost all sight in my right eye, but it didn't go black, it was purple and blue clouds.
