
This has got to be one of the coolest ideas I've seen in a while: Miniature helicopters with LED lights flying in a pattern that creates a display in the air. Think of each helicopter acting as a pixel on a giant, airborne display.
It's called Flyfire and it comes from the innovative researchers in the SENSEable City and the Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems Labs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
The technology could be used for 3D public displays and is a step in the direction of "smart dust," a concept that involves a wireless network made of tiny, synchronized devices that work together in a swarm to accomplish some task.
