A man was arrested under the Terrorism Act today - just days after Britain's terror level was increased to 'severe'. The 30-year-old, from the Sparkhill area of Birmingham, was taken into custody early this morning, on suspicion of possessing material likely to be of use to a terrorist and of distributing terrorist publications.

Police said the man's home address and a residential property in the Kings Heath area of the city were being searched.Officers seized computer equipment from the Sparkhill property.

The arrest comes four days after the Home Office raised the terror alert level from 'substantial' to 'severe' - meaning that an attack is 'highly likely'. Intelligence sources said the decision followed a 'non-specific' warning from the CIA that the UK is facing an increased threat from Al Qaeda.

It is unknown if today's arrest is linked.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Bell, head of investigations at the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, said: 'This arrest comes as a result of a long, detailed and ongoing inquiry.

'The operation was carried out by unarmed officers in a way intended to cause the minimum amount of disruption for those in the immediate vicinity.'

The latest terror warning, issued on Friday, has led to a heightened state of alert among security services.

Have you heard the latest of the terror threats Chris?

These would be bombers, are having surgery to implant explosive devices inside their bodies, so they can pass through the airport x ray scanners undetected. That is scary. It makes me wonder why we keep letting these people into our countries, as they are clearly a threat to our National Security.

Yes, I read about it Nic. Scary stuff, will our Government never learn ?  Makes it worse that it will probably be a home-grown terrorist who eventually does one of these suicide missions against us. Surely a full-body scanner will pick something up though even if it's implanted ? It would show up as being a dense mass, wouldn't it ?  

I suppose THIS is a step in the right direction but, full body-scanning imagers were meant to be in place at Manchester Airport already on an experimental basis before the "underpant" bomber. It certainly wasn't in use when I went through before Xmas. Touch of stable -door-horse bolting methinks

Apparently female suicide bombers are having the devices inserted into their breasts so I guess they could say they had been surgically enhanced. Hopefully now that we are aware of what could happen,. we can be better prepared to tackle it.

The x ray scanners should have been in use a long time ago, the threat of terrorism has been around for as long as I can remember.
