A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of northern California on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake's epicenter was offshore 22 miles west-northwest of Ferndale, Calif., at a depth of 10.2 miles, the USGS said.
Police in Ferndale told NBC News that there were reports of gas leaks and items falling but no reports of building collapses. Police in Eureka and Fortuna said damage was still being assessed.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami watch or warning in effect.

There was a news report a week or two back saying the seals had left San Francisco Bay (Fisherman's Wharf) the explanation was that maybe their food supply had dried up. I said then, maybe these animals know there's an earthquake coming, not expecting it to be true.
One of San Francisco's most popular attractions, the sea lions who have gathered at Pier 39 for the past 20 years, have disappeared. The pier was originally colonized by a few bull sea lions in the late 1980s, but the population boomed to over 1,000, according to The Marine Mammal Center.
