The truth is up there. The trail of flame burnt through the night sky, a silver ball, shrouded by the angry inferno, barely visible. Those gathered gasped as the craft abruptly flipped, seemingly on its side, revealing a jet black spherical shape.
These are the sights a growing band of UFO spotters have been treated to over the last few weeks. And on a cold Tuesday night I joined them. Logical tells us we’re not experiencing a Close Encounter of the Third Kind - despite a plethora of X File sightings in recent weeks.
We, at The Mercury, don’t believe in UFOs.
But take a close look at this picture, taken this week, and tell us what the hell is up there.
The object - a burning trail in the sky - moved from the direction of Pye Green tower, arced, then disappeared, the flames suddenly extinguishing.
Thomas Zachariou first witnessed the weird light show six weeks ago. Since then there have been a number of ‘visits’.
The 35-year-old said: “The first time, the silver balls were clustered together. They reminded me of jelly fish - then they all separated.
“I have never, ever seen anything like this. Last week, it was there for three minutes. All we could see was glowing light, then the light went off and you could see the black base. It went sideways.”
Experts have blamed the spate of sightings on Chinese lanterns. Those who gather near the Pye Green fish bar, some armed with binoculars and telescopes, are adamant they’re watching something a lot more exciting than Oriental decorations.
