Police say they are working alongside the Department of Conservation following an ash and gas eruption at the Te Maari crater on Mt Tongariro this afternoon.

Inspector Steve Bullock, area commander for Taupo police, says while there are no road closures currently in place, he would "discourage" sightseers from travelling to the area..... VIDEO
