Ecuador has granted political asylum to Julian Assange in a move that will deepen a bitter diplomatic row with Britain. The WikiLeaks founder has been hiding out in the country's embassy in London for the last 56 days in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over sexual assault allegations.

He watched the announcement from inside the building and welcomed it as a "significant victory", although he warned embassy staff "things will get more stressful now". A bitter diplomatic row erupted after Ecuador accused the UK Government of threatening to enter its embassy to arrest the Australian....
