With a motley collection of blimps, balloons and paragliders zooming across the sky, it looks like a scene from classic children’s cartoon Wacky Races. But luckily Dick Dastardly and his henchman Muttley were not around to spoil these airmen’s fun. The bizarre scenes are from the much more sporting Icarus Cup, the oldest free flight festival in the world. The annual event, held at Saint-Hilaire du Touvet in south-east France, includes almost every type of aircraft. If it flies, you'll find it there. Hang-gliders and paragliders soar skywards, intrepid free-fallers in wing-suits plummet earthwards from helicopters, multicoloured kites dip and sway, and hot-air balloons rise gracefully into the early-morning air.
