In August 1976, Chuck Rak, an artist of some talent, invited three of his friends from the Massachusetts College of Art, Charlie Foltz, and the twins Jim and Jack Weiner, to canoe the Allagash waterway in Northern Maine. Chuck, from Vermont, had canoed the Allagash waterway during the summer of 1975, and Found it so enjoyable that he wanted to do it again. Allagash Wilderness Waterway is located between the White Mountains of New Hampshire (where Betty and Barney Hill were abducted in September 1961) and Loring AFB in Maine. Loring AFB was plagued by strange lights over the weapons storage area in October 1975.
On Saturday, August 21, Chuck and his pals loaded up his Chevy Vega and drove up Route 95 from Boston to Baxter State Park in Maine. After a night's camping, they climbed Mount Katahdin and the next day, Monday, they drove to the town of Shin Pond where they left their car in order to be flown to their Telos Lake starting point by a Scotty's Flying Service pontoon plane. Because roads in this area consisted mainly of private logging roads with such limited access, pontoon planes were the best way in.
On Tuesday morning, they continued to Chamberlain Lake camping at the Mud Brook campground on that night. On Tuesday evening, they and a number of other campers saw a peculiar light in the sky that appeared suddenly and then winked out. The following day, Wednesday, the four continued up Chamberlain Lake and by Thursday they had travailed the locks into Eagle Lake and arrived at the Smith Brook Campsite. That night, they decided to try some night fishing but before leaving they built a large bonfire to help indicate where they were camped. When they were about a quarter-mile from shore, they suddenly observed "a large, bright, pulsing spherical light" over the treetops and Charlie flashed three short, three long, and three short flashes at the object. The object responded and started moving towards them, making no sound. At this they panicked and paddled to the shore where they watched as the object then hovered for a few moments and then disappeared. However, on reaching their campsite the bonfire, which should have blazed for 2 to 3 hours, was burned down to coals - although they had only been gone for what seemed to be about a quarter of an hour.
