But if you think Michael J Fox was the first to try his hand on the floating vehicle then think again. Because far from the special effects used to bring it to life in the famous trilogy, this unique footage shows the U.S. Navy was developing the hoverboard for real - from as far back as the mid-1950s.
The video, which dates back to 1955, shows a member of the Navy navigating what is referred to as the 'flying platform'.
