Randy Holden has been called Rock music's long lost guitar great of the 60's and 70's (VH1 called him one of the fathers of heavy metal) …he may better be called the sound of pure energy...a force to be reckoned with in the 21st century. He has opened for The Rolling Stones on their debut Los Angeles concert, played lead guitar with the pioneering psychedelic blues-rock band, Blue Cheer; jammed with Jimi Hendrix and was considered to replace Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds. He also formed one of the earliest rock duos, Population II, in 1970. Randy's music retains the raw, primal fire of his roots and extends itself into surprising directions. This is a guitarist still in his prime!
We talked to Randy about his roots, his attitude (bad ass!), and his philosophy about music, art, and life. We also go into his lawsuits over music royalties, rip-off managers, "vertical integration" in the music industry to hide bookeeping and assets; copyright infringement, music piracy, and WHY artists must be able to protect their work for the sake of cultural identity.
