Artist Robert Kawika Sheer pushes the envelope of traditional photography. Spirit Shadows are some of the most complex single-exposure photographs ever created. They're all performed at night with exposures ranging from one minute up to an astounding seven hours. During the exposure, Sheer walks into the frame of his shot to create the figures. There's no digital manipulations and no multiple exposures.
This Hawaii-raised photographic shaman journeys into the frame of his shots with his body and spirit. He then takes his body out of the frame and leaves behind "a bit of the soul of humanity" on the negative in the form of a Spirit Shadow. The viewer should not be able to tell the race, creed, color or religion of the figures—instead, one hopefully sees the "commonality of the human spirit".
