
Fashions in horror come and go, but ghosts have a habit of sticking around through thick and thin. Over the last 15 years or so, we’ve seen the rise and rehabilitation of vampires, zombies a go-go, and an explosion in explicit gore: the sadistic fun and games of the so-called “torture porn” variety, in Hostel, the Saw movies, The Human Centipede, and various continental atrocities.
But the pendulum also swings the other way: to the subtle insinuation and suggestion of traditional ghost stories like The Others, The Orphanage, Paranormal Activity and this week’s Apparition. In these more classical horror films we’re reminded that what we don’t see can be more terrifying than severed heads or fountains of blood. All it takes is a glimpse, a hint of the uncanny, and our imagination will do the rest. As Michael Powell illustrated in Peeping Tom, nothing is more frightening than fear itself.....
