Nasa says its six-tonne UARS satellite penetrated the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean early on Saturday. The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is the largest American space agency satellite to return uncontrolled into the atmosphere in about 30 years.

I think NASA had a good Idea where it was going to land, the ocean. Maybe they were hoping a country like China would shoot it out of the sky and say, we saved the world, that didn't happen.
If NASA can pin point the Apollo landings at sea, I'm sure they can do the same with a incoming object they built decades ago.
