Astronomers have discovered the first Trojan asteroid sharing Earth's orbit around the sun. Trojans are asteroids locked in stable orbits by a gravitational balancing act between a planet and the sun. They have previously been discovered accompanying Neptune, Jupiter and Mars.
Scientists led by Martin Connors from Athabasca University in Canada suspected they may also be in stable positions orbiting with the Earth. But Connors says finding an 'Earth-bound' Trojan is difficult because its location can only be seen from Earth in daylight.
