Welcoming a new born into the world is a momentous occasion for any parent. But for Emily and Jose Maldanado, baby Matthew was an extra special surprise - weighing in at an eye watering 14 lbs 3.8 ounces. Poor Emily had to endure two days of labour before doctors in Salinas finally agreed to perform a caesarian section on May 9.
Father Jose had been told to expect a big baby, but Matthew's record breaking size surprised even seasoned doctors. Speaking to NBC, the infant's mother Emily said: 'They took him out and the doctor started saying 'damn', so they put him on the scale.' Dr. Roberta Bruni, who works at the Natividad Medical Center, said Matthew was the biggest baby the hospital's neo natal unit had seen.
She said: 'There was an absolutely incredible number so I thought they'd transposed the weight wrong. 'Then I came in here and it wasn't a transposition error. Speaking to the Examiner, a hospital spokesman confirmed: 'Yes, it is the biggest baby that has been born in the hospital.'
