A virtual reality experiment has created an 'Alice in Wonderland' illusion of shrinking to the size of a Barbie doll or growing as big as a 13-foot giant. Like Alice, who shrank and grew after drinking and eating consumables with strange properties, volunteers were disorientated by the experience.
Scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden performed the trick by adapting an earlier 'body swap' study. The illusion is created by giving participants virtual reality headsets which make it appear as if they have the body of an artificial dummy.
