England is often said to be the most haunted country of all (in terms of ghosts per square mile). This could be put another way: the English are the most credulous people of all where ghosts are concerned. The ghost business is currently booming – as popular now as it was in Victorian times when people were seance-mad.

We, on the other hand, have ghost-hunting tours of ancient pubs, hotels and country houses, and TV shows like Most Haunted, which attract vast audiences. So this book is a timely and comprehensive survey of 500 years of English hauntings, up to the present day. It attempts to discover what people experience. Report ghosts they certainly do. In that sense at least, ghosts certainly exist…..
